The
Past – How Sista Social Came to Be
Sista Social was born and raised in Shreveport Louisiana in May of 1973 she comes from a small
family. During her days of elementary,
junior and high school, Sista Social was very much involved in theater. After graduation
from college, Sista Social moved to Portland,Oregon.
In October of 1999
She went down to the public access station and obtained information on
cost and scheduling and what was required to produce a cable access show. Now
the next step was to figure out what kind of show Sista Social could produce. Well,
Sista Social has always been lighthearted, down-to-earth, funny, and spontaneous.
So, she thought, what better way to utilize her gifts, than to be a host and interview
people. Of course, it couldn’t just be anybody. It had to be people with
interesting things to say or unique talents. A show that gives people 20-30
minutes of fame. Folks who otherwise, might never be seen.
Now that she had that figured out, Sista Social decided that she needed
a tag line of some sort to reflect these people she interviews. After she began
taking her camera, studio and editing classes at Portland Cable Access, she
started to make friends with the employees there. One day, during a break,
Sista Social started playing around with words trying to come up with a catchy
tagline/slogan that would make her show stand out. She enlisted the help of
Gregory Franklin (one of the Assistant Managers at the station.) Together they
started to bounce ideas off one another until, “Eureka!” He helped her come up with the
greatest tagline. It was so fitting for Sista Social. The tag line read: “Sista Social interviews interesting people
you know with full attitude intact…and yes, we’re gonna go there!”
Sista Social had her tagline. She started to experiment with different
hairstyles, make-up and eyelash looks and, of course, she had to experiment
with different scarves, shoes, jewelry, and bows (which later became her
trademark). After all was said and done, Sista Social was ready. Now, all she
needed were guests for interviewing. Sista Social found her guests at different
community events, fairs, concerts, art exhibits, etc. Some of her guests were
musicians, artists, stuntmen, actors, magicians, sculptors, writers, and
humanitarians. This was perfect since Sista Social has always been about “the
peoples” and the community.
She produced just a couple of shows at first. But, after The Sista
Social Show started airing, she began to get feedback on the success of the
show. People really liked it! So, The Sista Social Show eventually became a
regular series that would air three times a week. Sista Social had developed a
following and gained recognition. Her guests referred their friends to her. It
was one such a referral when she met up with a musical group called Menomena.
They had heard of her, and she of them and since Sista Social was so impressed
with them, she decided to have them as guests on her show. Well, it was during that
show that they told Sista Social that they had written a song just for her
because they had felt inspired by her and her previous shows. Needless to say,
the “Sista Social Theme Song” was
born with the beginning lyrics saying: “Sista
Social will you go there, yes you will…Sista Social.” The song became an
instant success and played as the theme song for all successive shows.
The Sista Social Show has continued for five plus years now. Her main
reason for doing the show was to bring something that would be heartwarming and
funny to public access. A show that brings smiles and laughter in peoples
lives.
